I have been looking at a few pages on the ‘net & elsewhere & thought I’d pass on some quotes, I’ve read over the years :

1) “Penalties against drug use should not be more damaging to an individual, than the use of the drug itself.. Nowhere is this more clear than in the laws against the possession of Marijuana, in private for personal use” USA Pres. Jimmy Carter 1977

2) “To deal with drugs as a one-dimensional, law & order issue is to miss the point.. We have waves of violent crime sustained by drug trade, so we have to take the money out of drugs.. The countries in the region that have been ravaged by the armed violence associated with drug cartels are starting to think laterally about a broad range of approaches and they should be encouraged to do that.. They should act on evidence” Helen Clark ex-NZ prime minister, head of UN development program

3) “End the criminalization, marginalization and stigmatization of people who use drugs but who do no harm to others. Challenge rather than reinforce common misconceptions about drug markets, drug use and drug dependence. Encourage experimentation by governments with models of legal regulation to undermine the power of organized crime and safeguard the health and security of their citizens” Kofi Annan – Former Secretary-General, United Nations

BUT I also read this :

4) “I pledge allegiance to the Drug war of the United States of America, and to the hypocrisy for which it stands, One notion under Czar, Indefensible with Incarceration and Injustice for All” The Drug Warrior’s Pledge, attributed to Thomas Paine (?)

5) ‘Any relaxing of drug laws in Aotearoa/NZ.. is a step in the wrong direction’ (paraphrased) current Prime Minister of NZ

6) “I tried it, BUT I didn’t inhale” USA Pres. Bill Clinton

BUT also this :

7) “Concerned with the health and welfare of mankind.. recognizing that the medical use of narcotic drugs for the relief of pain and suffering and that adequate provision must be made to ensure the availability of narcotic drugs for such purposes…” Opening lines of preamble statement of the ‘UN single convention on Narcotic Drugs 1961’

SO.. I accept that there are still many voices, saying “More of the same !”

BUT there are increasing numbers saying “LAW REFORM NOW !!” including I&I
