Defending smoking

I read that a senior NZ opposition MP (‘minor party’ leader) has announced that using tax to stop tobacco smoking is a real ‘nanny state’ strategy !

He even went further & stated:

‘(name removed) has spoken out in support of the rights of tobacco smokers, linking his argument to the issue of legalising cannabis’

he added: ‘We all know smoking might not be good for your health, but the government hiking tobacco taxes in their 2016 “Get-Stuffed” Budget is just a lot of fat people sitting in their ivory towers telling smokers what to do.’

‘This has nothing to do with supporting smoking; it’s about fairness and speaking up for people’s personal freedom.’

‘This shows their gross hypocrisy. They want to have the country smoke-free by 2025; why not fat-free by 2025?’

He finished with this: ‘The government charges multinationals the pitiful amount of less than half one percent taxation while thumping on smokers a tax which will bring in $425 million over four years.’

‘What’s fair about that?’

‘It’s also inconsistent – there’s a fair number of MPs who want to make smoking marijuana legal

‘The risks of smoking should be made known, but this government also needs to face up to the massive problems we have with obesity, and for that matter, the abuse of alcohol also.’

I generally agree.. BUT also that smoking it not harmless, BUT adults should have ‘freedom of choice’
btw; VAPING is another option ! :/

it wont stop smoking but will have other ramifications such as creating a black market trade, more dairy and gas station, etc, robberies, somebody who has smokes on them will be threatened, maybe beaten and have their smokes taken from them, more people in jail for these crimes, more tax from the working people to cover all the extra police callouts, medical costs from hospitals who have to deal with stabbings, beatings and can imagine what the dairy owners, gas stations and small grocery stores think about this i doubt that they would like the thought of being threatened and maybe beaten, stabbed, shot and/or maybe killed congrats to our govt

cheers w for reply.. I tend to agree. Any prohibition, creates ‘unintended consequences’ (the same as Alcohol prohibition) I’m sure further attempts to stamp on tobacco, will do the same: black-markets, gangsters etc. :/
