Hemp Food OK

I read a recent press release that due to a trans-tasman trade agreement.. hemp seed based produce could be about to be given the Green-light in Australia & Aotearoa/NZ. Police have ‘warned’ that after ingesting these food items, ‘drug tests’ could give a positive result, but at a very low-level of THC.

The report makes the following points:

‘Food Standards Australia New Zealand (FSANZ) yesterday gave its green light to plans to legalise foods made from industrial hemp seeds.’

‘Newcastle doctor (name removed) — who was deregistered in 2005 for giving medical marijuana to sick children — yesterday welcomed the decision. He said hemp was a superfood and milk made from industrial hemp seeds was better for kids than cow’s milk.’

‘The nation’s food ministers blocked plans to legalise hemp foods in 2002, fearing it “may send a confused message to consumers about the acceptability and safety of illicit cannabis and pose problems for drug enforcement agencies’’.’

‘They rejected another proposal last year due to “ongoing concerns relating to law enforcement issues”. ‘

‘And the federal Health Department had complained that approving hemp foods “has the potential to promote a public perception that cannabis is an acceptable and safe product to consume”.’

‘But ministers met again in March this year and asked the FSANZ to draft a new proposal to legalise hemp food — 18 years after the first application.’

‘Final approval by ministers will hinge on a separate study of whether hemp seed consumption could trigger false positives in roadside drug tests.’

‘FSANZ issued its draft approval yesterday, concluding that food made from industrial hemp seeds is safe to eat — as long as it contains low levels of the psychoactive substance tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).’

‘It says hemp seed can be made into flour, protein powders, oil or an alternative to soy milk, and be used like poppy seeds in baking or stir-fries.’

‘The FSANZ assessment says that hemp seeds — which are approved as a food overseas — contain micronutrients such as thiamine, vitamin E, phosphorus, potassium, magnesium, calcium, iron and zinc.’

** It seems that the idea of ZERO-tolerance is finally accepted as unworkable !!
