I listened to a radio show last evening.. it has been 50 years since the ‘Summer of Love’ in 1967 USA. This was a main ‘highlight’ of the Hippie revolution/counter-culture. In San Francisco’s ‘Haight-Ashbury’ district, ‘freaks’ of all kinds, flooded in to join this revolution, where LSD & ‘marijuana’ were the signs of protest, that further widened the ‘Generation gap’.
Rock bands like ‘The Grateful dead’, followed by Jimi & Janis were regular ‘headliners’ at ‘love-ins’ & various other events that continued during this period. They interviewed a few of the ‘Hippies’ who are now getting into their retirement age.. one said it was almost the ‘end of an age of innocence’ BUT it was followed by a change, to the age of the ‘great unwashed’ & all the negative stories of DRUG ABUSE; Meth & Heroin also joined the regular ‘Drugs of choice’
Many said it ‘the best years of their lives’ & they still often reminisce about this time, when they ‘came of age’ with Free love.. followed by perhaps an excess of ‘Sex, Drugs & RocknRoll’. The thing I find totally beyond belief, is that the WAR on DRUGS, which stated at the end of the 1960s (under R Nixon) is still raging on, in much of the world. What happened to the sense of REVOLUTION; to change the world.. to a gentler, more accepting ‘state of mind’.. it seems to have just joined the RAT race/mainstream. I find it even more strange that the Hippies children, seem more ‘anti-Drugs’ than their parents ? perhaps a reversal of the situation/generation gap after the ‘excesses’ of this time.
I grew up in the 1970s & things like ‘the Summer of Love’ & the Woodstock music festival etc. were just fading memories of those who came a decade earlier..
